Rose’s father was still in an apartment in the building where Rose and her brother, Paul, were born. He was still working for a real-estate company. He was making a living, but the children would like to live somewhere else. They planned to spend part of their vacation with Flossy and Calvin on the farm.
The boys were in their last grade of high school and the girls were in the eleventh grade. So when school would be out in June, they would go to visit Flossy and Calvin for awhile. When the dances and parties were over for the graduation class, they got ready for their vacation on the farm.
Rose and Paul had a nice trip and were ready for a good time with Flossy and Calvin. Youngster of sixteen and eighteen years old are full of pep.
Calvin had to do his chores, so Paul helped him. Flo had to help her mother with the poultry, so Rose helped her. They fed and watered the chicken and, in the evening, gathered the eggs.
Rose said,” Hot dogs! Now I know where all those eggs come from that I have been eating all these years. Just go out and get them where the chickens put them.”
She watched the boys feed the calves and pigs. When the supper was over and dishes done and put away, they all went for a walk down by the lake.
They watched the sun sink in the west and create a beautiful sunset. They took off their shoes and waded in the lake awhile. They sat on the cool sand and watched the moon come up. The sky was so clear.
Rose suggested they go for a longer walk before they go in. The walked around the lake on another path. Along the way, they saw rabbits scurrying along and heard the owls hooting. It sure was a nice walk.
When they got close to the barn, the family dog came out to meet them. Calvin said, “Come on, pal, it’s just me.” And he stooped down and gave him a pat. “Come on, we are going to stay in this time. Now it is time for a snack.”
They had some sandwiches, a glass of milk and homemade cookies. Then it was time for bed.
The next day was Sunday and everyone went to church. After church, and the work was done, Flo’s and Calvin’s mother and father took them all in the new Ford station wagon for a nice ride through the country. They met some family friends along the way.
Flossy said, “I never had such a good time. I am so glad you came.”
They planned a picnic supper out in the park for the next night. The night after that, they went to lake. They had very happy evenings.
One night they stayed home and Flossy played the piano and all sang several songs. They turned on the record player and they danced until they wee all tired. They didn’t stay up late because they wanted to get up early to finish their work in the forenoon so they could go to a ball game in the afternoon.
In the evening there was swimming, then dancing to the music of the record player. They just were having a wonderful time!
The next day they went for a horseback ride down to old Mack’s Riding Barn. Rose and Paul didn’t know much about horses but they were game to try. They did pretty well for the first time. They went back for another afternoon.
Rose and Paul were learning what the farm life was like. But their time was about done on the farm for now. They had had such a nice time. They said they would coax their father to buy a farm close to them.
Well, they had to go home. It was time for the girls to go back to school and the boys were to go to college. Both decided to take up Agriculture. That ended the vacation for that time, but they said the would be out the Christmas vacation.
Rose’s and Paul’s father decided to buy a farm next to Dick Hood’s farm. Each family would have a nice big farm of 180 acres. They were close together again. The boys were in college and the girls would finish high school in the Spring.
Flossy got interested in another young man that was in college with Calvin. She and Paul didn’t see each other for awhile. But when Paul’s folks got moved down on the farm, the romance started all over again.
Each of the fathers planned to build a house on the corner of their farms. They were planning a double wedding the next year. The men built two houses about four hundred feet apart. Each one gave his son forty acres with a nice home on them for a wedding present.
The girls were out of school and the boys were out of college. They had a double wedding in the early Spring. They honeymooned in their new homes.
Everyone was happy, and soon began to plan for additions to the family. Flossy and Paul had a boy the next year. They named him Robert. But Rose and Calvin are still waiting for theirs at Christmas time.
Time was passing fast. It was now September and there was much to do on the farm. The trees and shrubbery took on a new look by turning so many beautiful colors.
Paul was breaking a two year old colt and was thrown off. He got many bruises and a broken leg. He was on crutches for awhile.
When Rose’s and Calvin’s baby came, it was a boy. They named him Richard. He was born on the tenth of December, just in time for Christmas. Calvin’s father commented about buying more Christmas presents this year.
Everyone is happy in Happy Corners in the Hood’s and Green’s farm homes.
